Vidyavrata (Babu) Baijoo, has a long record of service to the community. Currently, in addition to various business responsibilities, Baijoo is a city councillor who, though neither a ward nor full-time councillor, receives appeals for assistance from citizens at all hours of the day, and night. This is a reflection of his accessibility and his goodwill. It also reflects his sound judgement, for those who approach him receive a straightforward and honest response and, if warranted, his help.

He is a Maritzburg man, born and schooled here, who, nevertheless spent a number of years in Ireland where he continued his opposition to the apartheid regime through various bodies, including the South African Student Association, of which he was a founder-member. There he also studied electronic technology so that after his return to South Africa he was able to establish his own TV installation and repair business. Subsequently he changed his focus and now conducts his business interests under the banner of Baijoo Agencies.

Well-respected within ANC circles, where he has held several significant positions over the years, Baijoo is a member of the Economic Development and Planning Committee of the municipality. His views and pronouncements show wisdom and understanding and reveal a quiet passion for Organised Business, the PCB and the city’s economic advancement.
